Dental Fillings
Filling Materials For Restorations
Fillings or Restorations are done to restore a tooth damaged by a decay back to its normal function and shape.
For that we have:-
1. Amalgam ( Silver Fillings )
* Less Expensive
*Poor Aesthetics i.e. it doesn't match the color of the natural tooth. It is silver in color.
*Silver Fillings lasts at least 10-15 years.
*Good Strength i.e. can withstand chewing forces so used in posterior teeth.
*In Amalgam fillings destruction of more tooth structure while preparing the cavity.
2. Composite Resin ( Composite Fillings )
*Twice the cost of a Amalgam fillings.
*Excellent Aesthetics. The color can be closely matched with the natural tooth.
*They lasts 5-6 years or more.
*Well suited for use in front teeth or visible parts of teeth also.
*Less tooth structure needs to be removed as compared to Amalgam fillings while removing decay and preparing the cavity.
3. Glass Ionomer Cements ( GIC Fillings )
*Less Expensive than Composites.
*Good Aesthetics but not better than Composites.
*Lifespan generally 5-6 years or may be less.
*Most commonly used for fillings below the gum line and for fillings in young patients.
*Release fluoride which can help protect the tooth from further decay.
4. Ceramics ( Porcelain Fillings )
* Expensive comparable to gold fillings.
*Perfect Aesthetics same as natural tooth.
*Lifespan 10-15 years or more.
*More resistant to staining than composite resin materials.

*Aesthetics:some patients find gold more pleasing than amalgam, some prefer tooth colored material.
