 Filling Materials For Restorations 

Fillings or Restorations are done to restore a tooth damaged by a decay back to its normal function and shape. 
 
For that we have:- 

1. Amalgam ( Silver  Fillings )

* Less Expensive
*Poor Aesthetics i.e. it doesn't match the color of the natural tooth. It is silver in color.
*Silver Fillings lasts at least 10-15 years.
*Good Strength i.e. can withstand chewing forces so used in posterior teeth.
*In Amalgam fillings destruction of more tooth structure while preparing the cavity.

2. Composite Resin ( Composite Fillings )

*Twice the cost of a Amalgam fillings.
*Excellent Aesthetics.The color can be closely matched with the natural tooth.
*They lasts 5-6 years or more.
*Well suited for use in front teeth or visible parts of teeth also.
*Less tooth structure needs to be removed as compared to Amalgam fillings while removing decay and preparing the cavity.


3. Glass Ionomer Cements ( GIC Fillings )

*Less Expensive than Composites.
*Good Aesthetics but not better than Composites.
*Lifespan generally 5-6 years or may be less.
*Most commonly used for fillings below the gum line and for fillings in young patients.
*Release fluoride which can help protect the tooth from further decay.

4. Ceramics ( Porcelain Fillings )

* Expensive comparable to gold fillings.
*Perfect Aesthetics same as natural tooth.
*Lifespan 10-15 years or more.
*More resistant to staining than composite resin materials.

5. Cast Gold ( Gold Fillings )

*Very Expensive ten times that of amalgam.
*Aesthetics:some patients find gold more pleasing than amalgam,some prefer tooth colored material.
*Lasts at least 10-15 years or more.
*Good Strength can withstand chewing forces.

    1. I see the extend and location of decay and then suggest my preferences to the patients,then according to patients aesthetic preference and economic condition I finalize the filling to be done.
