TOOTH SENSITIVITY
TOOTH SENSITIVITY also called as Dentin Hypersensitivity is a discomfort or pain in the teeth as a response to certain stimuli such as hot or cold temperatures.
SYMPTOMS OF SENSITIVE TEETH
The most common triggers include:-
- hot foods and beverages
- cold foods and beverages
- cold air
- sweet foods and beverages
- acidic foods and beverages
- cold water especially during routine dental cleanings
- brushing or flossing teeth
- alcohol based mouth rinses
CAUSES OF SENSITIVE TEETH
The enamel is the outer layer of the tooth that protects it .In many cases,the tooth's enamel can be worn down from:-
- brushing teeth too hard.
- using a hard toothbrush.
- grinding or clenching teeth.
- regularly eating and drinking acidic food and beverages.
- Tooth decay, broken teeth ,chipped teeth.
- worn out fillings or crowns.
- temporary sensitivity following fillings, crowns or teeth bleaching. This should subside after several days.
- gum recession-it cause sections of tooth exposed and unprotected causing sensitivity.
- GERD (gastro esophageal reflux) cause acid to come up from stomach and esophagus which wear down enamel of the teeth over time.
- Gastro paresis and Bulimia - conditions that cause frequent vomiting thus cause acid to wear down enamel.
- Desensitizing Toothpastes.
- Brushing more gently using softer toothbrush.
- Alcohol free mouthwashes.
- Fluoride gel or prescription grade desensitizing agents in office.
- Mouthguard to prevent grinding of teeth during night.
- Gum Graft in case of gum recession.
- Treating medical conditions like GERD ,Bulimia.
